Somalia has some of the worst health indicators in the world. According to the latest estimates, only 20% of Somalis have access to basic health care. One in five children dies before their fifth birthday and one in every four children is malnourished. Maternal mortality rate is among the highest in the world (1,000 per 100,000 live births). Immunization rates are extremely low (in 2008 DPT3 coverage was only 31%). High prevalence of tuberculosis and malaria is endemic in several areas of the country. HIV infection, while remaining below 1%, represents a major epidemic concern. Health infrastructures, where still existing, function without necessary drugs, equipment or trained personnel.

CISP's health and nutrition effort

The Health sector has been a priority for CISP since the start of its activities at the beginning of the Eighties. Nutrition, reproductive health, immunization, communicable diseases and health infrastructures are the key areas of CISP support in this sector, together with health education and capacity building of health workers and communities.
