Fadhumo Testimony – How Vocational training is Changing Lives PDF Print

 

Mogadishu, Somalia - Fadhumo Bile is a mother of five from Guri-Ceel in Somalia’s Galgaduud Region. She qualified to receive training on tailoring, tie-and-dye and cooking at a vocational centre supported by CISP, a few years ago. This was the first step in her journey to success. After graduation CISP donated sewing machines to her and thirty other graduates to assist them start small tailoring businesses in order to generate income.

 

Fadhumo runs a retail shop and her mother helps her attend to customers, while Fadhumo makes a popular flowing gown for women locally known as baati, on the veranda just outside the shop. She has expanded her baati business and now supplies baatis to retailers in Guri-Ceel.

 

Having noticed Fadhumo’s outstanding growth in business skills, CISP gave her an opportunity to train other women from the area. She became a trainer with the organization teaching women the art of cooking, tailoring and tie-and-dye. Fadhumo’s life was never the same again. Other organizations also call her to teach local women in their vocational training programmes.

 

Late April this year, Fadhumo together with twenty four other women from Mogadishu were selected to attend training in Mogadishu. The training focus was on making of re-usable sanitary pads. The  women will, after learning how to make the sanitary kits, be contracted by CISP to produce the kits to be supplied to school going girls. In the process the women will have a reliable source of income. By the end of the first part of the training Fadhumo had perfected the art of making the kits.

 

During the follow up sanitary kits training, Fadhumo was appointed as a training assistant to assist the other trainees learn faster. "I was appointed as an assistant because I am a fast learner," she said smiling confidently. "My experience with CISP has been a successful one. Now my future looks brighter and I am so grateful."
